It’s surprising what overtakes you on the roads of Egypt.
Circa April 1992.
How it didn’t hit the roof of our truck I will never know.
We were travelling along the Red Sea coastal road from Cairo to Hurghada when the driver noticed something strange in his rear view mirror. He said, “you wont believe what’s coming up the road behind us” when I took a look back I saw this helicopter in the distance, luckily I had my camera with me and took a series of shots as it approached and overtook us.
Just after this incident we got two blowouts within 15 Minutes of each other. Chris, the driver had to hitch a lift to the nearest village to see if he could get someone to come and help us repair the tyres. I waited around 2 hours and was giving up hope when I saw a huge truck loaded with large pots coming up the road towards me, sat on the top was Chris with a second hand Toyota wheel and tyre bought from some Arab guy. When the truck stopped he hurled the wheel down to the road and it bounced around five times and came to rest next to our truck. Boy was I glad to see that wheel, when I took a closer look at it I noticed that it was bald and had a chunk out of it down to the steel wire. At least it was inflated and we had no choice but to use it. We got to Hurghada a couple of hours later and had a good laugh about it in the hotel bar over a few ice cold beers……..fond memories.
